A yarning space for headspace Kalgoorlie

headspace Kalgoorlie has been selected by the Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission to receive $33,250 in grant funding through the Royalties for Regions program.

The funding will go towards building a yarning space for young people.

Chelsea Hunter, spokesperson for headspace Kalgoorlie, said, “The yarning space will be an outdoor seating area that will provide an informal and safe space for young people to hang out and chat, as well as an approachable entry point into the service. It will be a great addition to headspace.”

Shayne Flanagan, Chief Executive Office of the  Kalgoorlie – Esperance Development Commission, said, “headspace is playing a critical role in the delivery of Mental Health services in our region and in particular for our Goldfields youth.”

“As part of the Regional Grants Scheme assessment process the GEDC recognised the impact headspace was having in the community and were keen to support a project that aims to make access to these services more culturally appealing to Aboriginal youth through the installation of a ‘Yarning Space’ as a soft entry point to these critical services”.

headspace Kalgoorlie is a safe place for young people needing mental health, general and sexual health information and support, drug and alcohol information, counselling or vocational and educational assistance.

Those seeking more information on headspace can visit www.headspace.org.au or drop in to headspace Kalgoorlie at Level 1, 48 Brookman Street, Kalgoorlie.
